On September 16, 2026,the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially published ISO 9001:2026, the new edition of the world’s most widely used quality management standard. This update, which has been anticipated for more than a decade, reflects the profound changes taking place within organizations: more interconnected value chains, more demanding customer expectations, accelerated digital transformation, growing climate challenges, and the need for operational resilience.

ISO 9001:2026 does not fundamentally change the foundation of the standard; rather, it strengthens, clarifies, and adapts it to a more complex global environment. It emphasizes leadership, a culture of quality, ethics, an understanding of risks and opportunities, and the integration of emerging technologies.

A Standard That Evolves with the World
For nearly forty years, ISO 9001 has served as an international benchmark for structuring performance, improving customer satisfaction, and building trust. The 2026 version addresses a simple reality: organizations no longer expect their quality management systems to merely ensure compliance. They want a framework that supports decision-making, strengthens resilience, fosters innovation, and creates sustainable value.

The revision also incorporates the climate amendment published in 2024, which requires organizations to assess the impact of climate change on their operations and to integrate it into their governance.

What's New in ISO 9001:2026

The new version introduces targeted changes designed to improve clarity and consistency:

  1. Strengthened leadership and quality culture: Management must demonstrate a more visible commitment, exemplary ethics, and a vibrant quality culture.
  2. Clarified risks and opportunities: The standard provides a clearer distinction between the two concepts and encourages a proactive approach to seizing strategic opportunities.
  3. Easier integration with other ISO standards: adoption of the HLS structure, simplifying integration with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001, etc.
  4. Expanded explanatory appendix: A new chapter helps organizations understand the intent of the requirements and apply them consistently.
  5. Addressing Climate Change: Direct incorporation of Amendment A1, now mandatory for all management system standards.

ISO Survey 2024: A Global Snapshot of Certification
The latest data fromthe ISO Survey 2024, compiled via IAF CertSearch, confirms the central roleof ISO 9001 in the global management systems landscape:

  • 1,474,118 valid ISO 9001 certificates worldwide in 2024
  • 2,321,640 certified sites.

ISO 9001 remains the most widely adopted standard in the world, accounting for about half of all active management system certifications.

The sectors with the most certifications include:

  • metallurgy and metal processing,
  • the automotive sales and repair business,
  • electrical and optical equipment,
  • professional and industrial services.

These figures reflect strong global momentum, driven by a focus on reliability, transparency, and sustainable performance.

A phased transition through 2029
The publicationof ISO 9001:2026 marks the beginning of a three-year transition period, in accordance with the rules of accreditation bodies:

  • ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid through 2029.
  • Audits can be conducted on version 2026 starting now.
  • The transition to the new version can take place during a surveillance or renewal audit.
  • This gradual transition allows organizations to incorporate these changes into their strategic cycles, transformation plans, and continuous improvement initiatives.

A standard that influences the entire standards ecosystem
Since ISO 9001 is the most widely used standard in the world, its revision naturally impacts the industry-specific standards that are based on it:
IATF 16949 (automotive), EN 9100 (aerospace), ISO 22000 (food and agriculture), ISO 50001 (energy), etc.
These standards will need to gradually align with the 2026 version, according to their own timelines.

Conclusion: ISO 9001:2026, a standard for a changing world
ISO 9001:2026 is not merely a technical update. It is a standard that supports the profound transformations taking place within organizations: digitalization, sustainability, resilience, ethics, and the complexity of value chains.
It strengthens companies’ ability to navigate a more demanding global environment, while preserving the principles that have made the standard a success for nearly forty years.

With more than 1.47 million active certifications, ISO 9001 remains the most influential management standard in the world, and its 2026 version opens a new chapter—one that is more strategic, more sustainable, and more people-centered.
