This course provides a solid grounding in the fundamental engineering principles that dictate the extent and composition of protection within a power system. Using minimal mathematical treatment, it introduces the basic vocabulary to describe protection issues, using schematics to demonstrate the application of protection in transmission and distribution networks.

The course is suitable for technical generation engineering staff, new graduates and unit operators: any staff where knowledge of protection is an issue.

Module 1 - Role and types of protection
What is power protection, system layout, busbar configuration, fault types, earthing arrangements, protection types, distribution & transmission systems?
Module 2 - Instrument Transformers
Current transformers, current transformer types, voltage transformers, residual voltage and open delta connections, capacitive voltage transformer, CT and VT.
Module 3 - Protection equipment
Fuses and relays.
Module 4 - Ancillary/auxiliary equipment
Auxiliary supply for industry, batteries and charging methods, DC system layout and design, tripping circuits, closing circuits, communication links, remote-end fault clearance, auto-reclosing, synchronisation, automatic voltage control fault recorder.
Module 5 - Protection schemes I
Earth fault protection, overcurrent protection, distance protection, unit protection, direct wires schemes, power line carrier, voice frequency phase-comparison protection, current differential protection, busbar protection, circuit breaker fail protection.
Module 6 - Protection schemes II
Transmission protection, protection of transmission transformers, transformer feeder protection, backup protection, connection and protection of generators, remote control and monitoring.
Module 7 - Protection management & site considerations
Drawings, commissioning and acceptance tests, relays, safety, routine maintenance and inspection tests, fault investigations.
